2008 Imagine America Foundation LDRSHIP Awards Reception on Capitol Hill

The Imagine America Foundation recognized six outstanding individuals who have shown remarkable achievements throughout their careers as both students and as soldiers in the U.S. military. On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, the Imagine America Foundation hosted the 2008 LDRSHIP Awards Reception on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. along with co-host Military.com and in cooperation with the Career College Association. The Foundation was honored to have Congressman Joe Barton of Texas stop by to make a few remarks.

The LDRSHIP Award was established in 2004 to recognize outstanding career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and who have decided to further their education. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants to active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired U.S. military veterans attending a participating Imagine America institution. 2008 LDRSHIP Award
In its 4th annual award presentation, the Imagine America Foundation presented six career college students who served their country honorably and have excelled academically with its 2008 LDRSHIP Award. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants to active-duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired U.S. military veterans attending a participating Imagine America institution. Honorees maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average and at least a 95% attendance record.
2008 Pioneer Award
Specs Howard, founder of the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts was awarded the 2008 Imagine America Foundation Pioneer Award. The Pioneer Award recognizes career college founders, owners or operators who have provided exceptional support and leadership to the career college sector. Howard started his career in broadcasting as an on-air radio personality on Cleveland radio in 1948. Renowned in the broadcast industry, Howard later founded the Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts in Southfield, Mich., to provide practical, hands-on training for aspiring broadcast professionals in 1970.
Imagine America Promise
Nelnet Inc.’s Senior Vice President Chris Cimino and Vice President Kevin Reilly presented a $25,000 check to the Imagine America Foundation in support of our 2008 Imagine America Promise scholarship program. This exciting program is the actualization of the Foundation’s promise to assist students who are currently enrolled at participating Imagine America colleges and whose exceptional grades show a strong commitment to their current program of study. The Imagine America Promise scholarship provides $500 and $1,000 cash grants toward each student’s schooling.
Representatives from each of the scholarship recipients spoke at the award presentation. These members included: Reps. Howard Coble (R-NC), Bart Gordon (D-TN), Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), and Tim Murphy (D-PA). Other congressional members also attended the event to express their support, these included: Reps. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Joe Wilson (R-SC), John Mica (R-FL) and Representative Virginia Foxx (R – NC).
