FOUNDATION HIGHLIGHTS

Financial Help for Military Veterans Attending Career Colleges

By Torian Brown

Servicemen and -womenDo you know of anyone who is currently, or has served in the U.S. military? The Imagine America Foundation supports those who serve through our Imagine America Military Award Program (MAP). MAP is a $1,000 career education award that is available to any qualified active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired personnel of a United States military service branch for attendance at a participating career college. This award can help those with military service receive career education and make the transition from military to civilian life. To date, MAP awards have provided financial assistance to nearly 3,000 military personnel.

Applying for MAP: Applicants must be active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired United States military personnel in good standing; have a likelihood of enrolling and successfully completing postsecondary education; and have financial need.

Deadline: MAP has an annual application deadline of June 30. Eligible military personnel may begin applying for this award on July 1 of each year.

To view a listing of career colleges that participate in MAP, or to apply for this award, visit the "Prospective Military Student" section of our web site at www.imagine-america.org.

Imagine America Military Award Program

Career colleges - The Imagine America Foundation is now accepting enrollment for the 2007-2008 MAP program year. These are your ideal students: mature, motivated men and women with access to tuition assistance and government-supported financial aid through the G.I. Bill and other programs. Through our partnership with Military Advantage and its more than 3 million members, we inform military personnel about the MAP through the military's web site, www.military.com (a subsidiary of Monster.com). Your college will be supporting an innovative grant program that recognizes the importance of our country's servicemen and -women.

To enroll your career college in Imagine America MAP, you must be accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For more information about enrolling your college, contact Foundation staff member Chris Carroll. Chris is the Foundation's new Manager of Strategic Development. Chris' primary responsibility will be to develop and strengthen the Foundation's partnerships with colleges and organizations in the career college sector of higher education. Chris has previous experience in the career college sector as the former Manager of Membership and Communications with the Career College Association in Washington, D.C. Chris can be reached at 202.336.6812 or chrisc@career.org.
